What is the Best Facial Epilator?

When looking to buy a facial epilator you may find yourself a bit unsure as to which epilator to choose. The main question is should you buy an epilator that is specifically designed for the removal of fine hair from the face? Or should you buy a normal epilator which comes with head attachments that allow the epilator to be used on the face? What is the difference? Well it all depends on how you intend on using the epilator. If you do not intend to use the epilator on areas other than your face, it would probably be best to choose an epilator which has been designed for facial use only. Facial epilators are usually slimmer and easier to use than regular epilators. They are also generally less expensive, so this decision may save you money in the long run.

If, however, you do intend to used the epilator you buy on other areas of your body as well as your face, such as the legs and underarm area, it would be wise to choose an epilator which can be used on all areas, including the face. So, once you have made up your mind on whether to get a facial epilator or a regular epilator, you may be wondering, which epilator is the best choice for me. We have researched the best epilators on the market and have compiled a list of 5 of what we think are the best facial epilators for you to choose from.

What to look for in a facial epilator?

Gentle

A good facial epilator should be gentle on the skin. It shouldn’t operate too fast and it should by no means ever grip the skin. Look out for epilators with curved heads which allow them to move effortlessly on the surface of the skin. A curved or contoured head lets an epilator reach all the hairs while avoiding the risk of nipping the skin on any awkward spots.

Precise

When removing unwanted hair from the face precision is key. It can be difficult to manipulate some larger epilators over small areas such as the upper lip. Look for an epilator with a small head which can easily be used on such areas. Keep in mind that some larger epilators come which precision attachments which makes them much easier to use on the face.

Bellabe Facial Hair Remover are a really unique way to remove unwanted hair from the face. These gadgets stand out from the crowd because the are inexpensive and are quite effective. Bellabe Facial Hair Removers are manually operated and consist of a tight spring which is set between two handles. To operate the Bellabe, you bend the spring into an upside down U-shape, as seen in the image. You then remove the hair by placing the U-shaped spring on the skin and gently twisting the handles in towards each other in a clockwise and anti-clockwise manner while rolling the spring along the skin.

Bending the spring allows the bands on the spring to separate. As the spring is twisted and rolled, the spring catches the hair and pulls it from the root. This use of a spring in hair removal is how the very first electronic epilator operated. The best thing about the Bellabe is that it is portable and you need no power source to use it. The not so great thing about the Bellabe is that you may need nerves of steel to twist the spring on some particularly sensitive areas. The slower you go the more discomfort you may feel, so perhaps an electronically operated epilator may suit us sensitive types.

The Braun SE7681 Silk-épil 7 is an outstanding epilator that just about ticks all the boxes. Not only is it a regular epilator which can be used on the legs and underarms, it is also gentle enough to be used on sensitive areas such as the upper lip and chin as well as the bikini area. It is cordlessly operated so all you have to do is just charge it up and within an hour you can epilate continuously for 40 minutes without any annoying wires or batteries getting in the way and wasting any of your time. The Silk-épil is a wet/dry epilator meaning you can use it in the shower or bath, which is known to reduce epilation discomfort.

The Philips HP6576 Satin Perfect Deluxe Epilator is another all over body epilator which is designed to be used on all areas of the body including the face. This epilator’s textured ceramic discs can easily grip even the slightest of hairs including those found on the upper lip and chin. It’s contoured head allows for a comfortable and safe epilation of such delicate facial areas. It’s built in light helps you to spot those small stray hairs which can be so easily missed.

The Norvika Tweeze Automatic Tweezer is exactly that, an automatic tweezer. It pinpoints even the smallest hairs and removes them quickly and painlessly, 30 times faster than any manual tweezer. It is much better than a manual tweezer as it removers hairs without any pulling, scratching or irritation of the skin. The Norvika Tweeze is so small and portable you can take it with you anywhere.

The Emjoi Epi Slim Epilator is a battery operated facial epilator. It’s slim design lends to it’s use on sensitive areas such as the upper lip, chin, bikini area and the underarms. Though the Emjoi Epi is designed for these delicate areas, it can also be used to touch up other areas such as the legs. As it is slim, it is discrete and very portable so you can take it with you when you travel, with no need to worry about adapters for plugs as, like we said, this epilator is battery operated.

The Ultimate Guide to Upper Lip Hair Removal

Quick Navigation

Excess hair in women is a lot more common that you might think. Approximately one in every three women experiences hirsutism. Hirsutism is the medical name for excessive hair in women on areas of the body where hair does not normally grow. Areas in which women experience hirsutism include the upper lip, the chin and jawline and sides of the face. Hirsutism is often indicative of an endocrine dysfunction or a hormonal imbalance and can be a source of great distress among women who have this issue.

The good news is there are a great number of different methods of upper lip hair removal. Some of these hair removal methods are temporary while others are a more permanent solution. The aim of this article is to outline and discuss the various ways one can remove unwanted hair from the upper lip and to present the pros and cons of each.

Waxing

waxing upper lip

Waxing is one of the most popular forms of upper lip hair removal. This can be attributed to the many pros which waxing as a hair removal method has. One of these pros is that waxing is relatively inexpensive when compared to other methods such as laser therapy. Home waxing kits are readily available and are generally quite affordable. Another pro to waxing is that it results in clean and smooth skin with virtually no hair remaining on the area which is waxed. Not only that, because waxing removes the hair directly from the root, these results can last from 3 to 6 weeks as it can take quite a bit of time for the hair to start growing again.

Yet another pro of waxing is the resulting hair reduction over time. While waxing is not considered a permanent form of hair removal, repetitive waxing can reduce the hair over time making the hair shaft thinner and the colour of the hair lighter. You can also easily perform the waxing by yourself in the comfort of your own home which adds to the appeal of waxing as a form of upper lip hair removal.

While waxing has many pros, like other methods, it also has cons. One downside to waxing is that, due to it’s nature, it can be quite painful, more painful than any other form of hair removal. Waxing requires the smoothing of warm wax on the area which is to be waxed. When the wax has been applied, a strip of cotton or paper is placed on top of the wax and pressed down. Then, in order to remove the hair, the strip is ripped from the skin in one quick motion in the opposite direction of the hair growth. This removes the hair along with the wax and in doing so pulls at the skin causing more pain than most other hair removal techniques which do not effect the skin. Removing the strip as parallel to the skin as possible reduces the risk of skin damage.

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Lasts 2 to 3 weeks
  • Reduces hair over time
  • Can be done at home

Cons

  • Not permanent
  • Painful
  • Can cause redness and sensitivity
  • Can cause bumps

Threading

Threading

Threading is a very old method of hair removal which originated in India. In recent years the method has become quite popular in Western countries. Threading utilises a strand of special thread, usually made of cotton or polyester. The strand of thread is doubled before being twisted and held tight in the hands and sometimes the mouth depending on the method used. The twist of the thread is rolled over the skin and the unwanted hair becomes caught within the twist of the strand. The hair is then removed quickly from the follicle.

Threading works the same way as tweezing, however there are some notable differences. For one, threading is a lot more efficient and accurate than tweezing is and takes less time. While tweezing removes one hair at a time, threading can remove several hairs in a straight line. This makes threading a great method of shaping eyebrows but can also be used to remove larger areas of unwanted hair on areas such as the upper lip and chin. Threading is very gentle on the skin compared to waxing or plucking. With waxing, the skin is tugged quite a bit, resulting in unnecessary pain and sometimes skin damage. Tweezing can cause scars if the skin is accidentally caught. With threading, only the hair is pulled, leaving the skin alone.

Threading Tip

Threading is a hair removal method which requires training and great practice, which means it is not likely to be a method you would choose to remove upper lip hair at home. It is best advised to visit a professional beauty therapist who is trained in threading if you wish to try threading to remove upper lip hair.

Pros

  • Lasts 1 to 2 weeks
  • Quick, efficient and precise
  • Gentle on skin

Cons

  • Expensive in the long term
  • Not easy to do at home

Bleaching

Bleaching is not really a method of hair removal but it is a popular method to reduce the appearance of upper lip hair. Bleaching upper lip hair lightens the pigment of the hair and so reduces the appearance of the hair. Bleaching is a great option for those who wish to reduce the appearance of upper lip hair but want to do so in a quick, affordable and painless manner. It is also a good option for those with sensitive skin or those who are just starting out on tackling their upper lip hair.

Facial hair bleaching kits are widely available in drug stores, pharmacies and supermarkets. These kits usually contain two containers of cream, one being the bleach cream and the other being the activator. Also included in these bleaching kits are spatulas and mixing trays. To use bleaching creams, the two creams need to be mixed together in carefully measured amounts and should used as soon as they are mixed.

The mixture should be smoothed on to the upper lip hair making sure all the hairs are covered. The cream should be left for the amount of time indicated on the instructions included with the kit. Once the required time has elapse the cream can be removed with the spatula provided, the area should be washed thoroughly to ensured any remaining cream is removed.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Painless
  • Gentle

Cons

  • Not permanent
  • Does not remove the hair
  • Use chemicals
  • Can bleach the skin

Epilating

Epilator

Epilating is another very popular method of hair removal and it is not confined regions of the body such as the legs or underarms. Epilating is just as effective in removing hair from the upper lip and chin as it is on these other areas of the body. Epilators are devices which electronically remove hairs from the the follicles of the skin using a number of metal discs which create a tweezing action as they rotate.

There are many epilators available on the market today. Some epilators, while designed for epilating the legs and other larger areas of the body, come with attachments which allow the epilator to be used on the smaller, more delicate area of the upper lip. There are also epilators available which are made exclusively for the epilation of facial hair such as that of the upper lip.

Epilating Tip

It is a good idea to have a hot shower or bath before you epilate. This ensures that the pores are open when epilating so the hair can be removed from the skin easier and with less pain. Make sure the area you wish to epilate is completely dry so the the epilator can grip the individual hairs easily.

Pros

  • Inexpensive in the long-term
  • Quick and convenient
  • Reduces the hair over time

Cons

  • Not permanent
  • Painful

Laser

Laser therapy is a very effective method of hair removal though it is probably the most expensive way to remove upper lip hair. Laser hair removal works by directing a laser-beam at the area of unwanted hair. The laser kills the follicle of the hair when it reaches it, preventing the hair from growing again. The area of hair must be shaved before the treatment in order for the treatment to work.

Sometimes, depending on the type of laser machine used, a gel is applied to the skin before treatment takes place. In general it takes about 6 to 8 sessions before the majority of hair follicles have been treated. These sessions are usually punctuated by 4 to 8 week gaps. It is always recommended that top up treatments are had every 6 months to a year in order to insure that hair regrowth is keep at a minimum.

For upper lip hair and other areas of hair which can be associated with a hormone imbalance, it is often advised to keep in mind that laser treatment for these areas can be more of a hair reduction treatment rather than permanent hair removal.

Laser Tip

It is always advised to avoid sun exposure of the area which received the laser treatment for a time after the treatment. Exposure of the laser treated area to the sun can result in hyper-pigmentation, a darkening of the skin’s pigment.

Pros

  • Semi-permanent to permanent
  • Do not have to let hair grow out before treatment

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Painful
  • Requires commitment
  • Is not effective on blonde, white or grey hair

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is an advanced method of hair removal which is similar to laser therapy and is usually performed by a trained professional Electrologist. Electrolysis involves the inserting of a very fine probe into the hair follicle which directs a small amount of heat at the hair’s centre of growth. This heat kills the hair and it’s ability to regrow. The dead hair is then removed from the follicle with a tweezers. As electrolysis treats hairs individually and over a period of time, it works well on the upper lip as it is a small area.

Electrolysis Tip

As the upper lip is very sensitive, numbing creams can be applied beforehand to reduce amount of discomfort experienced.

Pros

  • Permanent

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Painful

Depilatory Cream

Depilatory creams are creams which, when applied to hair and left for a number of minutes, dissolves the hair. This dissolving of the hair is achieved by the use of chemicals such as calcium thioglycolate or potassium thioglycolate which break down the keratin structure of the hair. These creams work well on upper lip hair as the hair on this area tends to be thin and fine and is quickly dissolved by the cream. As depilatory creams do not remove the hair from the root, regrowth of the hair can be noticed 2 to 3 days after treatment.

Depilatory creams come in many forms such as cream, gel, lotion, powder, aerosol or roll-on.

As the skin also contains keratin, depilatory creams can often begin to irritate or burn the skin if the instructions are not followed correctly.

Depilatory Cream Tip

Apply your favourite moisturiser or lotion to the area before the depilatory cream. The moisturiser or lotion can act like a barrier between the depilatory cream and your skin.

Pros

  • Painless
  • Inexpensive
  • Can be done at home

Cons

  • Uses harsh chemicals
  • Can burn skin
  • Not permanent
  • Results last only 2 to 5 days

IPL

IPL, which stands for Intense Pulsed Light, is a form of hair removal similar to laser. While laser uses one wavelength of light, IPL uses a range of wavelengths which is said to reduce the risk of burning or hyper-pigmentation. Generally 6 to 10 treatments are required which intervals of 1 to 3 months between each treatment. IPL treatments are gentle on the upper lip area and treatments are usually very effective.

Pros

  • Permanent over time
  • Painless
  • Gentle

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Requires commitment

Tweezing

If you have never tried hair removal from the upper lip before but you want to start, you may consider giving tweezing a go. Though some people may prefer to attend a beauty therapist to have their upper lip hair tweezed, tweezing is a method of hair removal which you can easily do yourself in the comfort of your own home. Compared to other forms of upper lip hair removal such as waxing or laser therapy, tweezing at home is very inexpensive. All you need is a high quality tweezers and you are ready to begin tweezing. Tweezing or plucking of upper lip hair

Tweezing Tip

It is advised to tweeze upper lip hair at night. This is because tweezing hair from such a sensitive area as the upper lip can cause redness of the skin. Tweezing at night means you can go to bed and give the redness time to reduce. By the time you wake up in the morning, the redness should have subsided completely.

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Can be done at home
  • Lasts 1 to 2 weeks

Cons

  • Not permanent
  • Can cause redness

Shaving

Though shaving is quite a common method of hair removal, it is not considered a popular option with women when it comes to removing hair from the face. The reasons for this are pretty obvious. In general, everyone associates shaving the the face as a very manly task. It is even considered a right of passage for men. You have become a man when you have your first shave. Therefore, it is understandable that women in general prefer not to use a razor as a way to remove unwanted upper lip hair.

Another reason which makes shaving not so popular with women for removing upper lip hair is the harshness of razors in general. Razors, especially the 3, 4 and even 5 blade razors available to buy today make a very close shave. This means they come very close to the skin and can even scrape the very top layer of skin away. This is not desirable on the delicate skin of the face.

Shaving Tip

Before shaving the delicate upper lip, generously apply your favourite facial moisturiser or lotion to the area. This will help to protect the skin from the harsh blade.

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Can be done at home
  • Quick and easy
  • Painless

Cons

  • Harsh on delicate skin
  • Lasts only a day or two
  • Leaves hair feeling sharp and coarse

What is an Epilator?

You may have heard of an epilator but have no idea what one is. So, what is an epilator? An epilator is any electronic or manual device which is used to remove hair from the skin by means of grabbing and pulling many times, simultaneously and in quick succession. This form of hair removal is similar to the waxing form of hair removal, however with epilators, no cells are removed from the surface of the skin.

Types of Epilators

Spring

Epilady Spring Epilator

The Epilady – the original epilator

The first electronic epilator was the Epilady which was first released in the country of Israel in 1986 by the company Mepro. This first epilator featured a coil spring within the plastic housing of the device. The spring was bent into a bow making the coils squeeze together tightly on one side of the spring while they splayed away from each other on the other side of the spring. Within the device was a motor which rotated the spring while it was still bent in a bow. This created a numerous tweezing action. Running the spring over an area of unwanted hair would allow the spring to catch the hairs and pull them from the skin as it rotated.

Epilady Spring Epilator Head

The spring head of the Epilady

Though electronic epilation techniques and technology has progressed a great deal since 1986, The Epilady, the very first electronic epilator, is still available today. There are other spring based epilator brands and models available on the market today also.

While just about every epilator is electronic or battery operated, there is one form of epilator which is manually operated. The Bellabe facial epilator, the only manual epilator, is also a spring based epilator. It consists of one coil spring which a handle on each end and is used primarily from removing hair from the face. To use, the spring is held in both hands by the handles, one handle in each hand. While holding the spring horizontally the spring is bent into a bow. To remove hair, the spring, while bent in a bow shape, is brought to rest on the area of hair to be removed. Both handles are then twisted inward, one clockwise and the other anticlockwise, while the whole spring is moved gently upwards (see image).

bellabe-facial-hair-remover-demonstration

Disc

With the success of the Epilady, there soon came a rival epilator on the hair removal scene. The Lady Remington Smooth and Silky by Remington was another product which was designed to operate in a very similar way to the Epilady, however it used rotating metal discs instead of a rotating spring. This new form of epilator lead the way for a new wave of epilators featuring metal discs.

Tweezer

Modern epilators no longer feature complete metal discs. Instead, the heads house a series of metal plates which are not completely round. As the motor rotates head inside the casing, the plates are rotated close to each other and then apart from each other very quickly which creates an effect similar to tweezing.

Epilator Features

Wet/dry

Some epilators are designed for dry use only while other epilators, which are called wet/dry epilators, are designed for wet and dry use. Wet/dry does not just imply wet or dry skin. Wet/dry epilators are cordless and completely waterproof meaning you can take it into the bath or shower and actually use it under the water. Pretty convenient!

Attachments

Most epilators come with extra attachments which extend the functionality of the epilator. The following is a list of attachments which may come with an epilator and a description of their purpose of use.

Hair Lifter

A hair lifter attachment lifts the hairs including short hard to catch hairs in order for them to be easily reached by the epilator. Hair lifters also relax the skin making the epilation process gentler.

Active Hair Lifter

An active hair lifter attachment does the same job as a hair lifter except it uses vibration to help lift any hairs that may be lying flat against the skin so that they may be reached by the epilator for removal.

Efficiency Cap

An efficiency cap attachment helps the epilator to make the perfect contact with the skin as well as helping you position the epilator at a perfect 90 degree angle to the skin. This allows the epilator to remove as many hairs as it can in one stroke.

Sensitive Cap

Sensitive cap attachments are specifically designed for delicate skin and sensitive areas. They reduce the size of the area the epilator head reaches so as to create a more precise and gentle epilation.

Facial Cap

A facial cap attachment allows a epilator which is primarily designed to be used on larger areas of the body (such as the legs and underarms) to be used on the smaller, more delicate areas of the face such as the chin and upper lip.

Facial Cap

Massager

A massager attachment usually comprises of a ridged roller which is intended for rolling on the skin in order to stimulate it prior to epilation. This helps to reduce the amount of pain experienced when epilating.

Massager Cap

Active Massager

An active massager attachment uses vibration to simulate the skin prior to epilation to reduce pain. When used post epilation the active massager helps to sooth the skin and reduce irritation.

Shaving Head

A shaving head attachment turns an epilator into a shaver. This is a particularly useful attachment as it mean you can have a epilator and a shaver in one item and do not need to buy a separate shaver.

Trimming Comb

A trimming comb attachment can be used on an epilator to shorten longer hairs to make epilation easier. Trimming combs can also be used to trim and style the bikini area.

Trimming CombExfoliating Brush

An exfoliation brush attachment is designed to remove dead skin cells from the skin and to stimulate the skin, encouraging skin cell renewal. Exfoliating brush attachments are comprised of numerous soft bristles which rotate when the epilator is switched on. This allows for simple and gentle exfoliation which is important as exfoliation prior to and post epilation helps to avoid in grown hairs.

What to look for in an epilator

There are a vast array of epilators available on the market today. When you browse the web looking for the right product, the sheer number of epilator models you may come across can be overwhelming. Where does one begin to choose the right model for them?

The epilator you choose should fit your individual needs so before choosing your epilator if is a good idea to determine what your epilating needs are. Do you travel a lot? Do you want to be able to use your epilator in the bath? Perhaps you have a low pain threshold. Answering questions like these can narrow down your options and can help you choose the best epilator for you.

Wet or Dry

Some epilator models are dry only, while others and wet and dry. If an epilator is dry only, this means that the epilator cannot get wet and should only be used on dry skin. A dry epilator is most definitely not waterproof.

A wet and dry epilator means that it can be used on both wet and dry skin. This is especially useful if you prefer to epilate while in the bathroom.

Power

One thing that you should consider before buying your epilator is what kind of power source for the epilator will suit you the most? The options available on the market include battery powered, mains powered, mains chargeable, and manual. If you travel a lot and may not have time or access to an electrical outlet to power or charge your epilator, a battery powered epilator may be the best choice for you. If, however, you want to use your epilator in your bathroom where there may not be an electrical outlet, and you would prefer not to have to buy new batteries regularly in order to save money, a chargeable epilator would be the best option for you.

Accessories

Different epilators come with different accessories and those accessories are widely varied. Common epilator accessories are storage bags, different head attachments and a cleaning brush. The kind of accessories you would like to have with your epilator will also narrow down your choices of epilators.

Braun SE7681 Silk-épil 7 Wet and Dry

The Braun Silk-épil 7 is number 2 on our list of bestselling epilators. Braun is another brand which features highly in the electrical beauty and personal care product shelves. The Silk-épil 7 is just one in Braun’s Silk-épil range and comes out as the most popular. Its popularity may be down to the fact that it is the first wet/dry epilator in the Braun Silk-épil range, making it the bestselling wet/dry epilator on the market today. This wet/dry feature allows you to do your epilating anywhere you please, whether that is in or out of the bath or shower.

With 40 Close-grip tweezers, the Silk-épil 7 is the most efficient of all of Braun’s epilators making epilation a breeze without the need to re-epilate areas more than once. Also a cordless model, this epilator removes hairs as tiny as 0.5 of a mm, meaning you don’t have to wait until the hair to be removed has grown out before it can be epilated. When you purchase this epilator you will receive 5 extra head attachments which include a facial cap and an efficiency cap.

Emjoi AP-18 Emagine

Number 3 in our top 5 bestselling epilators is the Emjoi AP-18 Emagine. This epilator stands out from the crowd immediately with its striking crimson red outer casing. However that is not the only thing which separates the Emagine from the rest; it is the first epilator which features Silver Ion Technology and also surpasses Braun’s Silk-épil range with a staggering 72 tweezers. A cleaning brush is included while extra attachments are available to purchase separately, which may be the only downside to this exceptional epilator.

Remington Smooth and Silky EP6010

The Remington Smooth and Silky is the most inexpensive epilator in our list, which may be its biggest selling point. While it is quite a basic model, it comes with 2 speeds and 42 tweezers, but lacks the attractive features that some other epilators do, such as cordless and wet/dry operation. The Remington has a curved head for comfortable and easy reach of difficult areas such as the knees and ankles.

Powered by a main adapter, this epilator comes with a protective cap and a cleaning brush. The Remington Smooth and Silky is the perfect epilator for you if you are looking to try epilation for yourself without too much commitment, or if you are on a low budget

Philips HP6576 Satin Perfect Deluxe Epilator

The Philips Satin Perfect is the second Philips epilator model to make our top epilators list. It is slightly larger than its counterpart, the Satinelle. This epilator possesses a unique shape which features an extra-wide head designed to give you a more comfortable epilating experience. The large, ergonomically curved head and hypoallergenic, textured ceramic discs contours the body and allows for the gripping and removal of a larger area of unwanted hair much faster than most other epilators. The head is gentle enough to be used on sensitive facial areas as well as on the body.

This epilator also features a hair lifter which lifts even the shortest hairs making sure they are reachable by the ceramic discs. A built-in massage system simulates the skin prior to epilation and soothes any irritation post epilation.

The Satin Perfect is a mains chargeable epilator which charges in just one hour giving you a total of 40 minutes cordless operation. It has a built-in light which aids in the epilation process by making it easier to spot fine, stray hairs. With two speed settings you can have more control over the speed at which you epilate.

The Philips Satin Perfect comes with an impressive range of extras which include four head attachments, illuminating tweezers with built-in light and mirror, cleaning brush and storage bag. The extra head attachments include a pivoting performance head which enables you to keep the epilator titled and the perfect angle to ensure best results.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

There is no doubt about it, laser hair removal is one of the most expensive hair removal solutions available. With this form of hair removal however, the benefits far outweigh the cost. They don’t call it a hair removal solution for nothing! Laser hair removal can be extremely effective, reducing hair by up to 75% in just 6 sessions.

The actual amount you will pay for laser hair removal treatment will vary a lot depending on a number of factors. These factors include the area which you are getting treated, the amount of sessions you will need to have to achieve the desired level of results and the place where you get the laser treatment.

Laser hair removal using industry sized laser treatment machines should always be preformed by a trained professional. If a laser hair removal treatment is advertised or offered for a significantly reduced price, it is advised that you carry out due diligence in order to ensure that the treatment is legitimate and that the practitioner is a trained professional. Ask to see a certificate of qualification.

Most laser treatment clinics offer a free consultation to anyone who is interested in getting laser hair removal. These consultations usually include a patch test. A patch test is when a small part of the area which is to be treated is shaved and treated with laser. This allows you to understand what the laser treatment entails and allows the practitioner to learn how well your follicles react to the treatment and whether or not you have any form of a reaction to the laser.

The Ultimate Guide to Epilating

If you are looking for an at home hair removal solution, you may consider buying an epilator. Epilators are a popular method of hair removal amongst men and women. By the end of this article you will know all there is to know about epilators and and epilating and you will be much better equipped to decide which is the best epilator for you.

An epilator is an electronic device which removes hair from the skin by the root. Epilators get their name from the verb ‘to epilate’, which means to remove hair from the skin. Epilators remove hair from the skin in a tweezer like fashion. Most epilators feature many small metal plates housed in a plastic casing. When the epilator is switched on the metal plates revolve, come together tightly and move apart. It is this tweezing motion which removes the hair.

Types of Epilators

Spring

The first electronic epilator was the Epilady which was first released in the country of Israel in 1986 by the company Mepro. This first epilator featured a coil spring within the plastic housing of the device. The spring was bent into a bow making the coils squeeze together tightly on one side of the spring while they splayed away from each other on the other side of the spring. Within the device was a motor which rotated the spring while it was still bent in a bow. This created a numerous tweezing action. Running the spring over an area of unwanted hair would allow the spring to catch the hairs and pull them from the skin as it rotated.

Disc

Column 1

With the success of the Epilady, there soon came a rival epilator on the hair removal scene. The Lady Remington Smooth and Silky by Remington was another product which was designed to operate in a very similar way to the Epilady, however it used rotating metal discs instead of a rotating spring. This new form of epilator lead the way for a new wave of epilators featuring metal discs.

Tweezer

Column 1

Modern epilators no longer feature complete metal discs. Instead, the heads house a series of metal plates which are not completely round. As the motor rotates head inside the casing, the plates are rotated close to each other and then apart from each other very quickly which creates an effect similar to tweezing.

Epilator Features

Wet/dry

Some epilators are designed for dry use only while other epilators, which are called wet/dry epilators, are designed for wet and dry use. Wet/dry does not just imply wet or dry skin. Wet/dry epilators are cordless and completely waterproof meaning you can take it into the bath or shower and actually use it

under

the water.

An efficiency cap attachment helps the epilator to make the perfect contact with the skin as well as helping you position the epilator at a perfect 90 degree angle to the skin. This allows the epilator to remove as many hairs as it can in one stroke.

Facial Cap

An efficiency cap attachment helps the epilator to make the perfect contact with the skin as well as helping you position the epilator at a perfect 90 degree angle to the skin. This allows the epilator to remove as many hairs as it can in one stroke.

Massager

An efficiency cap attachment helps the epilator to make the perfect contact with the skin as well as helping you position the epilator at a perfect 90 degree angle to the skin. This allows the epilator to remove as many hairs as it can in one stroke.

Exfoliating Brush

A trimming comb attachment can be used on an epilator to shorten longer hairs to make epilation easier. Trimming combs can also be used to trim and style the bikini area.

Using an Epilator

When using an epilator you gently glide the epilator along the skin. As the epilator makes contact with the hair and skin, the metal plates come together, trapping stray hairs. As the metal plates continue to revolve in their casing, they pull the hair from its root and discard of the hair. This process happens very quickly. As the plates revolve at different times to each other, the grabbing, tweezing and discarding motions happen simultaneously.

It is advised to keep the skin taught while using an epilator. This prevents the skin from snagging and prevents any unnecessary pain. It is also a good idea to rub the skin and hair in the opposite direction to which the hair grows. This will help the hair to stand upright leaving them in easy reach of the epilator. When using an epilator, always move the epilator in the opposite direction of the hair growth.

Pain

Removing hair from the skin will always involve some degree of pain and epilators are no exception. However there are some things which you can do in preparation to using an epilator which can lessen the amount of pain experienced. Having a hot bath before epilating allows the skin to heat up and soften. This opens the pores so that the hairs won’t cling on as tight in their follicle which means removing them will be less painful. The hot water will also soften the hairs which can reduce the risk of the hairs snapping or breaking when being removed by the epilator. This means less pulling on the hair and skin to cause the breakage and so a lot less pain.

Many have claimed that epilating the skin while the skin is immersed in water (using a waterproof or ‘wet’ epilator) causes little or to no pain. Some epilators come with massaging rollers which awakens and stimulates the skin prior to epilation so that the hair removal is not cause as much as a shock to the system. Massaging rollers which soothe the skin post epilation are also available.

Pre-epilation wipes are wipes which, when used on the skin before epilation, can help to reduce pain. These wipes come which some brands and models of epilators.

As the first experience of epilation can be the most painful, some people opt to get the area waxed first, before trying hair removal with an epilator. The waxing reduces the returning hair’s size and strength allowing pain-free hair removal to be continued at home with an epilator.

In general, the more you epilate, the less pain is experienced.

Power

Epilators are available in a range of different power supplies allowing you to choose the power supply which suits your lifestyle the best. Epilators are available as battery powered, mains powered (with a mains adapter), chargeable via the mains, and manual.

Chargeable epilators are quite popular as they are the most convenient option. Being able to change your epilating device means you do not have to regularly buy new batteries to power it. Needing to buy batteries can be inconvenient, expensive and bad for the environment. A chargeable epilator is a great option if you plan to use yours in the comfort of your bathroom where there may not be an electrical outlet. Waterproof or ‘wet’ epilators are generally chargeable epilators.

Battery operated epilators may be a good choice for you if you travel a lot.

Wet or Dry

When looking for the best epilator for you, you may come across the terms wet and dry in relation to epilators. A wet/dry epilator means it can be used dry or in conjunction with water for example in the bath or with wet skin. Non water

Cleaning

Cleaning your epilator is quite easy and convenient. Most epilators are cleaned by detaching the head from the body of the epilator and rising it under lukewarm water and leave, preferably on a towel, to dry. Some epilators come with a brush which allows you to loosen and brush away any hair which may be stuck in the epilator head. It is a good idea to clean your epilator after each use to keep it in good working order. It may even be necessary to clean the epilator once or twice during the epilation process to ensure a quick and effective epilation.

Pros and Cons of Epilating

Pros

  • Hair removal lasts longer.
  • Epilators remove hairs from their root. This means that the hair will be slow to grow back and so hair removal with an epilator lasts for a few weeks compared to a few days when shaving.
  • Inexpensive
  • Unlike waxing and laser hair removal, home epilator kits are very affordable as there is an epilator for every budget.

Cons

  • Not completely pain free
  • Compared to other pain free hair removal options such as shaving and hair removal creams, epliators can cause pain, much like tweezing or waxing.
  • Time

It is advised to wait until the hair which is to be removed has grown to ¼ inch in length. This allows the epilator to grip the hair in order to remove it.

Price

Epilators are one of the most affordable hair removing options available. As long as you buy a good model from a reputable brand and look after your epilator, you will probably only ever need to buy one. Once you have bought your epilator you can remove unwanted hair in the comfort of your own home without needing to make repeat visits to your local beauty salon to get waxed or lasered which can both be very expensive.

Epilators come in many different shapes, sizes and price points. The price of an epilator depends on the quality of the model, the dependability of the brand, and the amount of extras which come with the epilator itself. An epilator can be bought for as low as £9.99 to as high as £155.99 and above so you are sure to find an epilator to suit your needs and your budget.

Epilator Tips

It is recommended to use an epilator on hair that is approximately ¼ inch long. Hair that is long than this can possibly get tangled in the epilator and cause unwanted and unnecessary pain.
